We spent the last few weeks of class working in a group creating our version of the play Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry. This was our opportunity to engage in all sorts of grotesque behavior. Fart jokes, body function jokes, everything under the sun. Nothing was off limits.
The workload was heavy, but it was all worthwhile in the end. It was challenging to get the whole team together for rehearsals and meetings because of everyone's schedules, but we managed to deliver in the end. Improv skills came in handily. We all brought out our nastiest selves and had fun putting on a show.
This Ubu Roi project was also a chance to try out directing others which I've never done before. It was an interesting experience, communicating your vision to actors and getting them to execute that vision while leaving them room to bring their own interpretation as well.
It was also nice to hear my clown song, Eminem's Lose Yourself on the last day of class. I had to rap a part of that song in Clowning 2.
The image above is my third in my clowning series. I had not set out to do another one, but it felt incomplete not to have 3. So this will go toward my quota for the year.
Hopefully we'll have another clowning class in the spring! I already had a name in mind, Clowning 4:Play.
