I chose Eminem's "Lose Yourself" because I liked the song and also because the message to seize the moment was something that resonated with me.
I realized it was going to be a difficult exercise but I had no idea just how difficult it would be until I tried to memorize the lyrics. Ended up just trying to do the first verse. Because it was going to be done a capella, I didn't have the music to help me. I had to keep the beat up or else I would lose my place.
It was tempting to try to find another simpler song, but I decided to take the chance with the rap. This past Monday, I did the rap in front of my classmates. I made tons of mistakes the first time and then when I did it the second time, I totally mentally blanked out and ended up improvising of other lyrics.
Needless to say, I was mad at myself for forgetting the lyrics. I knew that the goal wasn't to deliver the lyrics perfectly, but I was disappointed because I knew that I could do better.
I got another chance to redeem myself today. In improv practice, my
classmates gave me another chance to perform the rap. It was gratifying to be able to do it again without completely blanking out. I'm very thankful that my improv buddies supported me in this effort.
