Completed Granny Square Blanket
Here's my completed granny square blanket
Crochet granny square blanket
When I was growing up, I often saw my grandmother knitting or crocheting blankets and scarves. Actually, we still use these blankets today so they've lasted well!
I finally found the time to learn this year, so I've been working on a crochet project--a granny square blanket. What makes it the perfect project for me is that it's quite portable--I can crochet with just a hook and a ball of yarn. Also, I love the fact that I can see progress that I am making with each completed square. Crochet is faster than knitting--and also more forgiving in terms of how mistakes show up in the piece, so this works well for a beginner such as myself. Lastly, it allows me to use up yarn scraps and play with different color combos.
The final blanket will require 108 of these 6 inch squares, so I've got a ways to go, but the repetitive motion of crochet is very calming and meditative so the side benefits will be nice.

Postage stamp notecards
While cleaning out my desk, I found a small plastic bag of postage stamps from my younger, stamp collecting days. They weren't fancy stamps by any means, mostly American stamps from the 1980's. Remember when stamps use to be 25 cents?
I threw the stamps away in the trash can because I wanted to clean out my desk and had no use for the them any longer. However, it just didn't feel right to just throw the stamps away. It seemed wasteful. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with these stamps, but I retrieved them from the trash and placed the bag back into the drawer.
Then, one day I got the idea to glue the stamps to a blank notecards to create notecards featuring a bit of American history. I laid the stamps out so that it covered the entire front surface of the card, making a quilt-like pattern. Ended up being a quick and easy project and best of all, I got to salvage and put the stamps to use!

Paper mache piggy
I made this paper mache piggy for a friend's baby shower. She was expecting a baby during the Chinese Year of the Pig, so I created this piggy as a decoration for the party. It was a fun and messy project involving newspapers, glue, water, a balloon, and paints.
