Combining different textures and materials is something that's getting my interest. When I did this piece I really didn't have an preconceived idea about the end product. I just placed one thing on top of another and the final result turned out better than I expected, so that was nice.
When I think of collage, my first thoughts go back to grade school when I had to make collages of the food groups. I haven't done much collage since then, but I recently created a collage as part of my volunteer work and it brought back fun memories. I guess you can also call a mixed media piece.

As mentioned in my last entry, one of my projects this year is learning how to refinish some furniture. Here's a photo of an old desk that I hope to save and return it to a useful life once again. It's a sad-looking little desk right now. The drawer on the left isn't actually missing, though. I just pulled it out to start sanding it. Nevertheless, there's a bit of work ahead. I used this desk when I was a kid . I stuck some stickers on it and even carved an "A" on the surface for fun. It';s been in the garage for ages and was going to get tossed in the dump, but I wanted to give it try to refinish this desk. I figured it would be a low-investment piece to work on. If the results were disastrous, I wouldn't feel too bad and if it ends up looking nice, I can feel proud that I can it a second lease on life. So far, I've sanded the first drawer and started on a second drawer. I been sanding by hand, but I think I will use an orbital sander next time. I also have to remove some old stickers too. Should be an interesting experiment. I'll post some more photos as I make progress on this project. Yes, it's already February and I haven't written down my resolutions for the year yet. I've been keeping busy though, so that's good, right? My guiding theme for 2013 is time investment. Overall, my goal is to focus my time and energy on what I value, which are lifelong learning/personal development and self-expression/creativity. Toward that end, my resolutions are to: 1) Complete seven paintings or drawings (preferably large-scale or on canvas) 2) Participate in art show at work 3) Learn how to knit (the photo associated with this post is the ribbed scarf that I'm currently working on) 4) Complete my crochet blanket (a continuation from last year) 5) Complete crochet hat 6) Refinish a chair 7) Refinish a desk 8) Refinish drawer 9) Try out lino printing 10) Finish reading Fellowship of the Rings 11) Create tile coasters 12) Crochet dish towels 13) Try amigurumi (crochet/knit stuffed animals) A lot of items on my list are completely new to me, just as amigurumi and refinishing furniture, so it will be a learning experience. It's perfect because they combine my interest in learning new things/skills and arts and crafts. Also, they give me a sense of achievement to know that I am making progress towards a goal. Let's see how much I can accomplish this year! |
