The assignment is different from any other I've come across so far. Our task is to select music and create a piece where we endow the ball with some purpose as we tell a story using movement.
This is challenging in many ways. First, we need to decide on what story we want to tell. Then we need to find music that will help support the actions that we are showing. Meanwhile, we have to be affected by the ball, all while trying to coordinate the timing and practice commitment and focus.
For my ball project, I'm going to use a soul song,"I Can't Make It Without You" by Fred Hughes. My idea is to show how desperate and lost one can feel if they're addicted to their cell phone and are separated from their phone. The setting will be a home and the character is trying to make it through a self-imposed digital detox. Trying to distract herself from thinking about the phone, she tries different tactics such as napping or reading a book, but her efforts are futile. All she can think about is her phone (represented by the ball) and she feels anxious and desperate. Finally she breaks down and decides to get her phone again. With lyrics like "I need the strength only you can give to make it another day," I thought the song was fitting.
Not exactly an uplifting or motivational story, but I think it's one that many of us can identify with.
My next task is to work on the scenes. Each one should be a strong image that helps move the story forward. Afterwards, I'll need to coordinate these scenes with the timing of the song.
Lots of work ahead!
