Here are the remaining drawings for July. I was distracted from my drawing by ceramics, but I'm happy that I was still able to stick with it. We're definitely into the 2nd half of the year!

My goal was to use up all 25 pounds of clay and I did it! The image above is of my clay babies from the summer. Okay, I admit it, a lot of the clay was also wasted during wheel throwing.
The pieces that have color or are whiter have been fired once. The next class is the final class; it's when I'll have a chance to apply glaze. Last year, I completed 21 pieces during the summer session; this year I did 16 pieces. It was such a crazy rush last year trying to glaze all those pieces on the last day, that I learned my lesson. Looking forward to painting on the glaze. Because I've been focused on ceramics class this Spring and Summer, I've neglected my crochet blanket project. However, now that ceramics class is winding down, I've returned to crochet.
After doing some research, I finally found a stitch that I like for combining my granny squares. It's called the flat stitch. I'm planning to do alternating rows of grey and off white. It'll be a slow process, but I enjoy seeing the progress I each time I sit down to work on my project. Here it is...the second set of my July drawings.
I haven't been able to send as much time as I'd like on my drawings because ceramics class has been taking up my attention. Every time I wake up early to go to my 9:00 a.m. ceramics class, the same thoughts come up--ugh, I wish I could sleep in, why do I do this to myself, I need more sleep, I'm still sleepy...Somehow, I manage to eat some breakfast, hop on a bus and make it to class.
However, once I get to class, I usually forget my sleep deprivation (with the help of some coffee), and get into the work ahead of me.. Time is limited in class and much of it is spent on cleanup, so with so much left to do, there's no time to waste. I'm focused on using the wheel while I'm in class, but still have to make sure that the pieces that I've worked on earlier are not too dry or wet for trimming. Timing is so essential to ceramics and having a class once a week makes it even more tricky to manage. Anyway, I'm trying to use up my bag of clay, so I have to bring some home to work on because I don't have enough time in class. Above is a photo of a figurine that I'm working on. I had to cut an opening to attach a head to the main body. Working at home creates a big mess, but it's been worth it. It's a great for stress relief. Continuing my daily drawings for the second half of the year. Not always easy to do this. I often think, I could be sleeping right now and instead, I'm doodling. Still good for me to keep on practicing, though. I'm less critical of myself now that I'm forcing myself to churn out something for each day.
I decided to invest in some tools to allow me to do clay sculpting at home. I got a set of tools and a banding wheel.
There is such a large assortment of tools--to scrape, smooth, scratch, etc...I'm not sure what the function is of each, but I'm sure I'll eventually find out once the need to accomplish a task comes up. The banding wheel is a nice addition. It will enable me to rotate a piece as I work on it without having to move it. I've got my eye on some additional tools, but I think this is a good start. Here they are...the rest of my June drawings.
Hard to believe, but this marks half a year of drawings. I'm pleasantly surprised I've stuck with this for this long. The key for me has been posting on social media. Knowing that my friends are expecting to see something each day has been the pressure that I needed to keep at it. I don't think that I would've made it past January if I didn't share my drawings in a social media setting. |
