I do it to document the process, but also as a bit of an insurance policy because with ceramics, it's a long process and things can go wrong at many points. I don't want to be left with no record of my work especially if I put my heart into it.
And I'm glad I've been doing this because last week I made this vase. It survived a bus ride from home to the studio, but while transporting it to the shelves to be fired, it fell off my board and plopped unceremoniously to the floor.
I can still remember the moment it fell, like slow-motion. It completely flattened on one side, but miraculously I was still able to lift it off the floor. It looks ridiculous, but I placed it on the shelf so we'll see what comes of it! Proof yet again not to get attached to your work.
