I know nothing about singing. I don't even sing in the shower. So this was a new challenge for me. The closest I ever sang was in clowning class and that's when I did Eminem's Lose Yourself. Extremely difficult because of the fast pace of the rap.
However, today I had to really "sing". The instructor gave each student some ideas for a song to sing based on the range of our voices. One of the suggestions she gave me was My Funny Valentine.
I wasn't too excited about the song, but I didn't have time to do research and memorize a song in a week, so I took the easy route and went with her recommendation. This song is super sentimental-- what a dramatic difference from the rap song. Honestly, I connected more with the rap song, but I had to try out a love song.
We have an accompanist on piano so that's very nice, but it was difficult to keep up with his tempo because I had been listening to Frank Sinatra's version on Spotify and wasn't really sure how it translated on the piano. Besides forgetting the lyrics, singing off key or breaking at the high notes, I also sung the wrong lyrics... I felt sorry for the accompanist and my classmates.
But despite the bad performance, I'm proud of myself for doing this. There are professional singers in the class, people who audition for musicals. And here I am with zero singing experience. Big range of talent.
I'll stick with this song again next week. Hopefully by then I'll be more comfortable with the lyrics and in the meantime, get some practice on the high notes based on some tips the instructor provided today.
